SPOTLIGHT: Black and White Wedding Invitations

It’s time for the biggest decision of your life… picking your wedding colors! What a fun, but nerve-wracking decision! If you’re anything like me, there are a ton of thoughts running through your mind…

How do I pick colors that will always be in style? How do I pick colors that will look good on everything - from table settings to suits? How can I feature my wedding colors in my invitations?

As a stationery designer, I love the classic look of black and white wedding stationery.

If you have ever considered black and white Save the Dates or black and white wedding invitations - here are 3 reasons why you should go for it!

  1. Black & white invitations will never go out of style

It’s true what they say - that black is always “in.” If you have any doubt about this, just look to fashion - where trends come and go, but black and white is perpetually iconic. My personal favorite example of monochrome style is Audrey Hepburn, whose simple outfits often featured slim black pants - a classic look that is just as stunning today as it was decades before.

Not too long ago, I created custom black & white wedding invitations… and looked to one of the most timeless fashion houses in the world for inspiration!

(Can you guess which fashion brand served as my muse?)

2. Black & white invitations are super versatile

Think black and white is boring? Think again! The beauty of a simple color palette is that you have a ton of freedom - depending on your style, you can make the colors work for YOU.

  • Are you a minimalist, or do you like drama? Black and white can do both! Take A&W’s invitation suite (above) for example - there are some minimalist details (such as the panel card with two lines of text from “Moon River”), but the invitation itself also has a bit of flair, with pearly watercolor roses against a stark black background.

  • Is your style more modern or traditional? Black and white can go either way! These timeless wedding invitations use bold serif font and houndstooth textures that feel a bit more old-school and traditional - yet the simple black & white palette also gives it a bit of modernity and edge.

3. Black & white invitations will “dress up” your event

If you’re a gal (or guy) who loves elegance - then black & white is a great option for your wedding colors. It’s easy to make black and white feel a little “dressy”!

As a stationery designer, my job is to help couples create wedding invitations that set the tone for their event. A&W’s passions were art and fashion - so for their invitations, we created invitations to reflect what would be an upscale & unique night. Using black & white went a long way to communicate the elegance of their wedding without specifically noting the dress code.

If you’re a guest receiving A&W’s invitations in the mail - you’ll know by the aesthetic of the invitations to “bring it” with your fashion!

Hopefully, I’ve convinced you about how MAGICAL a black & white color palette can be! Don’t forget that for black & white wedding invitations, you can create interest by using textures and patterns - all while the black & white color palette maintains an overall feeling of simplicity.

Oh - and in case you were wondering, these wedding invitations were inspired by... Chanel!

Are you considering a black & white color scheme for your wedding?

Cheers,
